Lal Masjid suicide attack kills 13 people

Musharraf’s troubles just do not seem like ending. After the whole action over the Lal Masjid build-up and subsequent police action, Pakistan has witnessed a flurry of action over by extremists and hardliners. There was an immediate reaction where the terrorists attacked Pakistani police and army causing severe casualties. The terrorists also tore up the agreement that they had with the Pakistani military, where they had promised to not act against the Pakistani military as long as they did not take action against them.
And now two actions. First the Pakistani Government had appointed a cleric to take over the running of the Lal Masjid. Students and hardliners summarily evicted the Government put cleric and the Government could not do a thing. And now, a suicide bombing near the Lal Masjid has killed 13 people and injured many more:

Pakistani authorities warned more suicide bombers were stalking Islamabad, a day after 14 people were killed in a blast near a mosque regarded as a symbol of Islamist resistance to U.S. ally President Pervez Musharraf.
A wave of suicide attacks, roadside bombs and shootings have killed more than 180 people, in a militant campaign triggered by the storming of the Red Mosque in Islamabad earlier this month to crush a Taliban-style movement. The government reopened the mosque this week, but trouble broke out on Friday as hundreds of followers of radical clerics briefly seized the mosque before being dispersed by police.

One needs to remember that all this is happening in Islamabad, a city run by the Pakistani Government, and the capital. This is not a city like Karachi or Peshawar, where there are ongoing conflicts or infested with hardliners. The Lal Masjid is not very far from the President’s mansion, and for such an attack to happen in a relatively high security zone, it is quite possible that elements of the army or intelligence services are complicit in this attack.
